Dr. Khalid Aziz
Neonatologist and associate professor of pediatrics at Memorial University of Newfoundland. One of his major research interests is neonatal resuscitation education and he is a regional instructor for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
Neonatologists, in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and the provincial Perinatal Program, have been investigating the retention of skills after taking a neonatal resuscitation course using telehealth and simulation technologies. This study was supported by the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research and the Janeway Foundation.
Dr. Aziz is also interested in research on neonatal resuscitation as an interprofessional activity. Memorial University’s Division of Newborn Medicine has been involved in the development of a multidisciplinary Neonatal Resuscitation Team, investigating the performance in the caseroom. The team recently won a Best Practices Award from the Ontario Hospitals Association.
Dr. Aziz is a collaborator in the EPIC study (Evidence-based Practice Implementation and Change) which is developing novel methods for quality improvement in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, specifically prevention of hospital acquired infections. The EPIC is a project of the Canadian Neonatal Network, funded by CIHR, and involving 12 centres across Canada. This study was also supported by the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research and the Janeway Foundation.
Dr. Aziz is a co-author of the new Canadian textbook and program for stabilization of sick newborns, ACoRN (Acute Care of at-Risk Newborns). He is a member of the ACoRN Editorial Group that conceived and developed the project. Evaluation of the ACoRN is presently under way.
Dr. Aziz is a board member of the Canadian Paediatric Society; director responsible for the Fetus and Newborn Committee of the Canadian Paediatric Society; vice-chair of the National Neonatal Resuscitation Program Committee for Canada, an elected member of the steering committee of the Canadian Neonatal Network; and a local site co-investigator of the Vermont Oxford Network, an international database of Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Colleague Dr. Wayne Andrews at Memorial University is the local principal investigator of this network.
